About a year ago, Rebecca Page, who has Down syndrome, stopped wearing her glasses, stopped watching tv and then she informed me that she no longer wanted to watercolor paint.  After a couple of eye exams, and erratic test results, the local eye doctor suspected Keratoconus, an eye disease that causes thinning of the cornea.  Other than Cornea transplant, there is no treatment to fix this problem.  However, there is a experimental procedure which has been used in Europe for years, that can stop the progress of the disease by thickening the cornea.  Her vision will not be corrected, but stabilized.

The Gathering Place has a benevolence fund to help people with disabilities to pay for medical costs.  Rebecca was approved for this procedure today, and will have it done next week 12-17-14.  Each eye will cost $2500. plus travel costs to El Paso.  Insurance will not cover it because it is not an FDA approved procedure yet.  She will have one done this time, and 6 months later, she will have the other eye done. The Gathering Place board has decided to help raise money and support Rebecca's medical costs.

She has worked very hard to be independent, please help her to keep her independence and her eyesight!  Thank you!
