Julia Ray hasn't added a story.
From a young age, I dreamt of being in films where I move people in their seats. I envisioned bring them to tears, or having them jump up with joy because of a victory my character overcame. As I grew, my visions grew, expanding from being an actress, into also becoming a film maker. I couldn’t hush-up the ever expanding creative side of myself, and I finally got to experience what it was like to be on my own set (creation) in September 2013, where we all began to film, SUGARCAINE.
Jeremy Kulyk (Co-Producer/Co-Director) and I couldn’t have asked for a better cast & crew. The talent in Vancouver is so amazing, so I’m not surprised we found such dedicated and talented actors for Sugarcaine. And on set, its as if the crew were doing a choreographed danced they have been practicing for years. Besides minor time set backs and my over-zealous shot list (the list given to the film crew of the shots of all the shots for that day), we successfully completed three days of filming.
Shortly after that, we met weekly with our editor, Paolo Kaolo, to start and complete our final edit. After probably 40-50 hours of editing together, Jeremy and I had made a new friend and learned a tonne!! Also on board for post production was our composer, Sebastian Hugeneck, with who we had various Skype meetings with. (He lived in Austria with his wife at the time. They now reside in Vancouver.) He complete what is now our BEAUTIFUL original soundtrack for Sugarcaine. Kevin Barron was hired on board to do our sound engineering and GoStudios generously provided us with a sound booth to do our ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement), and our private screening for our cast & crew.
In the end, our final cut exceeded any of my expectation I had for my first short film. It was done so professionally and some of the shots brought me to tears. But something still didn’t feel “right.” To make our private screening date, we ended up cutting out the last couple scenes because the shots we’re just too static and didn’t flow with the rest of the film. In the final moments of decision, we decided to shorten it and leave the audience in suspense, wanting to see more and questioning what ever happened to the main character, Donny.
Have you ever made a decision you couldn’t change? Ever look back and wish you had said or done something differently?
Well, this is my opportuinity to finish a story I started and finish it the way it needs to be told. With your kind support, we'll be able to open up the book again on Sugarcaine, complete it, and help get it out into the festival circuts for the whole world to see!
Thank you for all your continual love & support. xo
Love,
Julia Christina Ray & Jeremy Kulyk
