Hello friends,

This August, I will be participating in a month-long human rights delegation to Rwanda. Each year, only 1 or 2 Canadians are chosen for this endeavour on behalf of Global Youth Connect, a reputable non-profit that has led the delegation since 1999. I need to fundraise $2,500 to support the delegation, and then cover the expenses associated with travelling to, from, and within Rwanda. Though these costs pose a significant obstacle, it is one that I am determined to overcome, because I fundamentally believe in the importance of the work that I will do as a member of this delegation.

Rwanda is a post-genocide nation seeking revival through community engagement, post-conflict resolution, and the advancement of human rights. Participating in this delegation will provide me with a foundational understanding of these social development strategies, an understanding I must have in order to help communities to grow stronger as a future civil engineer. Your donation will be an investment in my and my peers' abilities to help communities develop and prosper in Rwanda, and around the world.

Global Youth Connect (GYC) is a human rights learning and activism organization, dedicated to empowering young international leaders to advance the use of the human rights framework as a tool for social change and to ensure that all human rights are fulfilled for all people. Here is the program report from 2013 (http://tinyurl.com/rwanda-report-2013), as well as the program blogs (gycvillage.org) and youth policy blog (youthpolicy.org/interculturalblogging). The GYC program uses cultural, social, and political immersion to provide an incredibly unique, diverse, and valuable set of experiences for all stakeholders.

Together with delegates from several countries, I will be working side-by-side with Rwandans as they speak a combination of English, French, and Kinyarwanda.During the delegation, I will spend time in Kigali refugee camps, and work with the United Nations Refugee Agency. I will also be working with a multitude of non-profits such as INALAS, a non-profit lawyers association that supports Rwandans who cannot afford legal aid, and AMAHORO, a group dedicated to supporting orphaned youth afflicted by AIDS, among others.

I want to thank you for helping me turn this opportunity into reality. With your support, I will go to Rwanda and work with youth from all around the world and work to empower the Rwandan people through the use of a human rights framework. In doing so, I will be continuing the work that GYC started in 1999 and that it will continue do to until all human rights are fulfilled for all of the Rwandan people.

Thanks again, and all the best!
