Beloved Family and Friends!

I am thrilled to share with you news of an amazing opportunity that I applied for with my Global Health Perspectives program through the Denver School of Nursing. I was selected out of 30 students for a service learning internship traveling to Haiti in June 2014 and I am so honored to be one of the 6 students selected!

As many of you already know, it has always been a dream of mine to become a nurse. As such, I get the privilege to help those who are less fortunate by alleviating their woes and struggles. Only by the grace of God, I am where I am today and now I can begin to shed that same compassion that was shown upon me, to others.

This Global Health Internship partners with the Non-profit organization, Love Takes Root. The Denver School of Nursing faculty member leading our internship, Barb Wilkerson, is a pediatric nurse practitioner and she started this organization with her husband Dr. Rick Wilkerson (Orthopedic Surgeon) to provide sustainable care to a variety of patient populations. Please check out their website: http://lovetakesroot.org.

Denver School of Nursing has partnered with Love Takes Root for the past two years and it has been through the generous donations of supporters like you that allowed a new orphanage to be built in Jacmel, Haiti to replace the orphanage that was destroyed by the 2010 earthquake. Our internship will focus on transitioning the 50 Haitian orphans into the newly constructed orphanage while providing clinical care for the orphans and the surrounding community. While on the internship, we will scrub into surgery and assist Dr. Wilkerson in the surgical needs of the community as well. More importantly, our goal is to empower Haitian health care providers by teaching preventative healthcare practices in order to enable these families to thrive independently long after our departure! I am so grateful for this chance to contribute my nursing skills on a global level and would be deeply overcome with gratitude if you would partner with me to raise funds to help me get there and support the work of Love Takes Root! My goal is to raise $1600 by May 5th.

This money will cover my airfare and lodging in Haiti, but it will largely provide needed funds to donate medical supplies, equipment, and program support for the Love Takes Root orphanage in 2014. Every single dollar helps. I would love to keep you posted as I prepare for, attend, and return from this life changing experience. Please let me know if I can include you in emails about this internship or any questions you might have! Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and donations.

Take care and God Bless,

Cassie Pieterick
