Sam Schroth of Greenville has turned a tragic event into a way to help and inspire others.
A May accident left her wheelchair bound. But when she returned home, she wanted to do something positive and asked administrators at Greenville Middle School if she could volunteer in the school she once attended.
“I’ve always loved school,” said the 21-year-old Schroth, who completed her undergraduate degree in animal science with a minor in biology in three years. Her plans to start veterinary school were halted by the accident.
While staying at a cabin with friends, Schroth was standing outside on a clear, calm day when a five-foot section of tree fell on her. She had surgeries to stabilize her spine and therapy for a couple months in Colorado.
She began volunteering at the end of September. “I like to stay busy,” she said. “I wanted to see if there was some way I could help out. I wanted younger students to see and work with someone in a wheelchair. I wanted to give them a positive experience with someone in a chair.”
She tutors seventh-grade math and helps with eighth-grade science and Spanish. She also helps in band.
“It’s been exciting being able to see the progress the kids have made,” Schroth said. “The kids are cute and a lot of them are hilarious.”
She also has been able to speak to eighth-graders and to students at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh about her experiences.
“It stinks that it all happened but I have a great opportunity to educate,” she said. “There’s so much you don’t realize until you are chucked into it.”
Schroth hopes to share more in the community and provide a different perspective about people with a disability.
“They stop looking at the wheels and start looking at the person,” she said. “The wheelchair doesn’t define who I am.”
She is also working online part-time for the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. She hopes to go back for her master’s and maybe a Ph.D.
“I’m good at school,” she said. “It’s kind of my life.”
Eighth-grade science teacher Mike Paltzer said he is inspired by Schroth. She volunteers in his advanced science class, the same one she took as a student. News of her accident affected him but he quickly learned she would not be beaten.
“I realized that she would be the type of person that would not let this setback change her outlook on life or her plans, it would just present a new set of challenges for her,” he said.
Schroth is a role model to his students and many others, he said.
“Sam was always an inspiring person, but how she is dealing with this chapter of her life is just incredible” he said. “Sam is already thinking of how she is going to fulfill her goals and dreams in spite of the situation that was dealt to her, and I am most certain that she will achieve her goals, and do so with a smile on her face.”
