Fraser Long hasn't added a story.
I am not raising funds for a charity, but for one individual in need,
my friend Shihan Paul Coleman, is in need of aid with his battle
against prostate cancer.
This month is the month of Movember, when many people don't
shave in order to raise awareness for prostate and testicular cancer
and funds for treatement and research
I have not participated before, in fact I've never had a beard
before, desperately feeling the urge to shave after at most 3 days
normally, but this month in the spirit of Movember I have been
soldiering on despite the fluffy hairy jokes, not shaving specifically
to help my friend, and Goju Ryu Karate instructor of over thirteen
years, Shihan Paul.
Shihan Paul is the head of the Oxford Karate Academy, a 7th Dan
Black Belt instructor and examiner under both the All Japan Karate
Federation Goju Kai, and the All Japan Karate-Do Seiwa Kai
Association, he has been teaching Karate in Oxford over 30 years,
improved the confidence and skills of thousands of students world
wide, and seen 91 of his personal students gain grades from 1st to 6th
dan (a minimum of 3 years training for 1st dan, 23 years for 6th), he
is very highly respected worldwide for his instruction and ability. It
was through martial arts that I met him, and though I enjoy his
instruction greatly, all I wish right now, is that his time with his
lovely wife Natasha, his incredible one year old boy Blade (picture
from a few months ago) and his elder son Aaron, can last as long as
possible.
(You should see blade pop out karate moves on demand
at his age!)
The NHS at first offered him a drug trial with a new directed
radiation treatment that shows great promise, but subsequently dashed
his hopes as his condition is not yet severe enough for their short
list. all donations (less the unavoidable fundrazr.com transaction
fees) will go towards seeking similar treatment in the US or Europe.
I've started this donation page late, I already have 20 days of
growth and the urge to shave is high, so please donate anything you
care to spare to encourage me to see the month through, and help
Shihan Paul get the treatment he needs.
Obviously Shihan Paul needs a lot more than just £500, so many
of his friends and students are participating in various events to
raise money for him, such as a sponsored ride from Oxford to
Cheltenham, and a 24 hour kata-a-thon. No-one is expected to donate to
all of these, however, as encouragement if my lofty goal of £500 is
passed, I'll stay unshaven for an extra week so I’ll have an even
greater weakness when sparring, as all the students will be able to
pull my face about by my manly facial growth.
