Mary Bowes hasn't added a story.
Gracie was found by a fellow rescue friend in 2009 while she was walking through her yard, someone had tied out Gracie using a nylon boat rope around her neck. Miss Gracie must have known she could have a better life because she chewed herself free and took off, when she was found she still had the rope tightly wrapped around her neck. She came to my house within the week and was to be my 1st foster dog, but we soon knew that she had suffered a lot of abuse before she freed herself. She was hand shy and had no trust in people and was scared of everything, if we took her outside on lead she would shut down and just shake. Over time she started to trust us and our kids and loved hanging out with the other dogs in our home, we knew at this point that we could not let her go so we adopted her.
Over the years she has become a big part of our family and a welcoming member of our K9 pack to all of the new foster dogs we have brought into our home, to date she has helped with over 25 foster fur brothers and sisters. Gracie is still a very unsure girl and gets nervous with new people, places and things but she no longer walks the perimeter of rooms to avoid friends and family that come to visit and she just loves the kids in the house. You can catch Gracie at night keeping watch over her human and K9 family by walking to each room or crate and then laying in a spot that she can see most of us. She is also the 1st dog to welcome all the new ones and tries to comfort any sick ones by lying by them and just licking them.
Gracie is our big goofy happy go lucky girl and right now she is fighting for her life. On the night of 11/18/2013 she started to not act like herself and did not want to eat and only wanted to lay in her crate, by the following morning she could hardly get up and still did not want to eat. We took her to see her Vet on 11/19/2013 and we all knew within 5 minutes that she was in a life or death situation. Her RBC was dangerously low along with her HCT and HGB, her lab levels were almost to the point it would not sustain life. Her vet explained that she was losing blood somewhere and we had to find and treat that to give her a chance to live. She was taken to the emergency Vet that night where she is in ICU care to try and save her. She has been given a blood transfusion and they are rechecking her levels, as of right now 11/20/2013 7:00am we are waiting for the internal Vet to come in to take over her care. They feel at this point she has an autoimmune disorder that is attacking her red blood cells. Sadly we were not finically prepared for this emergency expense, but we are going to do everything we can to save her as she is part of our family, to date her care is now into the thousands.
Any help to cover her growing medical expenses would be greatly appreciated to help save our Gracie May.
