In Central Arkansas, there are many animal rescues working to pull adoptable pets from high-kill shelters and get them to safety in foster homes while they await a permanent, loving family. Not all of these rescues are working with a huge budget; most are just scraping by on donations.

Cleveland was one of those animals; a goofy, happy boxer/mastiff mix that we took in as a foster on a Friday afternoon. But by Saturday afternoon, it was clear that Cleveland was very sick. Unfortunately, the rescue organization we were fostering through had no emergency funding for incredibly expensive ER veterinary care, and Cleveland succumbed to his illness on Monday morning.

He wasn't with us for very long, but Cleveland's good nature and friendliness really touched our hearts, and in the wake of his loss we decided we wanted to help create and maintain a fund dedicated solely to emergency cases like this, so that no other animal in foster care has to wait until Monday to get the help they need.

Emergency veterinary care is expensive, and every penny will help future animals who, though they may have appeared healthy when picked up from the shelter, develops illness or injury when a rescue's regular veterinarian (who often works at a discount or donates their time and care) isn't available. The more we raise, the less a rescue needs to worry when this kind of event occurs; they'll know the money is there when they need it.

This fund will be strictly for emergency situations like Cleveland's, and once we hit our middle goal of $1500, I will apply for non-profit status and create a trust fund. If you can't foster a pet, this is another way to save a life.
