This summer, I am climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. It is Africa's highest peak. It rises from the Serengeti plains as a beacon high above Africa. I will hike more than 5100 vertical meters to the summit. This is my first major summit and my first multi-day trek.
Literacy is the key to providing a pathway out of poverty in developing countries. For many people, the language they speak at home is not the language of instruction at school. The difficulties in learning to read are compounded by the lack of available books in the languages families speak at home.

I visited Mali in the fall of 2001 and was struck by the lack of educational resources at the school in the village where I stayed. There were no books available to students or village residents in the languages they spoke.

This summer, I am traveling to Tanzania to explore the country and to hike Mt. Kilimanjaro. I am using my Mt. Kilimanjaro climb as an opportunity to raise awareness for the need for books in mother tongue languages and to raise money to provide programatic support to Mother Tongue Books.

All funds raised will go to Mother Tongue Books. For more information about Mother Tongue Books, visit their website at

The picture is of a classroom I visited in 2001. The language of instruction is French, although the home language of the students is Bambara.
