Kwiz DaWizzard hasn't added a story.
My name is Kwame Simpson. I am a senior here at the City College of New York.
I currently hold a 3.2 grade point average and will be graduating with my
bachelors degree in Sociology come this spring. Being a social scientist has
afforded me the opportunity of working with inner city youth children this past
summer. Having had such a great experience over the summer I now wish to go
study abroad and work with children and citizens of Morocco, Africa. I found out
just this week that I have been accepted into my school's International Studies-
Study Abroad program. Also for the first time in my life I have been awarded a
scholarship, which came through just this week. This will be put towards
covering some of the expenses but there is still a heavy remaining balance.
I am writing to ask for your support with this wonderful opportunity that I have
been blessed with! This journey is very important to me as it will help me grow
spiritually, mentally and physically. I was once the vice president of the Black
Student Union at my school and also over the summer I was in a position of
leadership that required much teamwork. I will be going with a group of about
17 of my colleagues from school. During the interview process the wonderful
people in the International Studies program made it clear that they were looking
for individuals with leadership skills and that is why they chose me.
As you may know, Africa is a continent that is symbolic to African Americans but
few have had the opportunity to journey to the motherland. I am still in shock
myself that this possibility for me is very close to becoming a reality. I have
reached out to any and everyone I know in search of help and support to make
this effort possible. Morocco is a land very rich in culture and history. Even
though it is only a stretch away from the parts of Africa that are experiencing
war turmoil, I am willing to send myself and my services to the continent.
Reason being that wherever there is war there soon after shall be peace. By living
in the ghetto I have had to make peace out of chaos and Harlem Children's Zone
has played a pivotal role in making that happen for me. It would mean a great
deal to me to be able to be a part of this exciting process of improving
educational opportunities in Morocco.
During my stay I will receive a small living allowance from my school, enough to
cover my tuition while I serve as a volunteer for January. However, getting there
won’t be easy, since the cost of volunteering on an international scale is
significant. The cost of my placement, training, air travel, insurance and field
support is almost $4,000. I am trying to raise the entire program fee through
extra work hours, grants, and a benefit concert/fundraising event, but I also
need your help. A donation from you would help make it possible for me to
contribute what I have to offer to African students. I am expected to leave on
January 2nd, I was granted a deadline extension due to the lateness of my notification and my financial obligations are as follows: By December 12th I need to
have at least $830, By December 31st I need to have the remaining $1670. Any
type of donation is gladly accepted!
Checks should be made out to Kwame Simpson and marked for International
Studies on the memo line. You can also call the International Studies department
directly and confirm this trip and my involvement. Also you could contribute to
the fundraiser page I have created myself via paypal, you could contribute with a
credit or debit card. Please note that Fundrazr will send you a receipt for debit or credit cards but make sure to print out your receipt from the website because all
donations are tax deductible!
Please feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions, ideas, or even
if you know anyone who might be interested in this project. Thank you so much
for helping make this experience possible for me.
