This year we have focused on broadening Bonny Slope student's skills in computer science, specifically using critical thinking and collaboration to build coding skills. Currently we have a set of Sphero SPRK+ robots which have become outdated. We can barely make it through one class period without having to re-charge them. Purchased roughly 10 years ago, the robots have connectivity issues and a very short battery life. With classes coming one right after the next, it often limits our ability to use the robots with multiple grade levels on the same day.

Fortunately, Sphero offers an upgrade program where you can trade in the older robots in exchange for a discount toward their new and updated Bolt robots. These Bolt robots function smoothly, have a longer battery life and have a broader scale application in different areas of learning.

We know that our students are motivated to see how their coding can directly influence and program a robot to perform a task. There is no greater feeling in coding than seeing a robot carry out the function exactly the way it was intended. We have explored drawing shapes, learning about angles, distance, measurement and other mathematical concepts. The students build confidence in problem solving and coming up with solutions as a team.

With the buy back program, our total for the 15 set Sphero BOLT Power Pack is $2653. Our wonderful BSCO is chipping in $999, and the Beaverton Education Foundation is matching all gifts up to the goal amount!
