Help us improve lung health in Hawaii

The Miss Hawaii Volunteer pageant has partnered with the American Lung Association in Hawaii to raise funds and awareness about lung health.  The pageant contestant that achieves the highest reach will receive the Dr. Elizabeth Tam Breath of Hope award. This award is on behalf of Dr. Elizabeth Tam, a pioneer in lung health in Hawaii and a strong advocate for the American Lung Association in Hawaii. 

The American Lung Association is the leading organization working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease, through research, education, and advocacy. Their work across the nation is focused on four strategic imperatives: to defeat lung cancer; to improve the air we breathe; to reduce the burden of lung disease on individuals and their families; and to eliminate tobacco use and tobacco-related diseases.

The need for lung health in Hawaii is vast: nearly 1 in 3 Hawaii high school teens say that they regularly vape; our rates of death due to asthma are nearly double the national rates; less than 4% of people at high risk of lung cancer get early screenings. The Miss Hawaii Volunteer program wants to change those statistics. 

The funds raised through the Miss Hawaii Volunteer Fundrazr campaign will help to:

• Fund the COVID-19 Action Initiative, which has pledged over $25 million nationwide to defeat COVID-19, a lung disease, and prepare for future lung pandemics
• Assist local kids with asthma through the Kickin' Asthma and Open Airways curriculum, an evidence-based program to help kids manage asthma triggers
• Advocate for policies to end the youth vaping epidemic  
• Increase access to early lung cancer screening for people who are at high risk for lung cancer

The Breath of Hope Award will be given on behalf of Dr. Elizabeth Tam, a pioneer of Lung Health in Hawaii and recipient of the American Lung Association's Breathe Easy Champion Mauli Ola (Breathe of Life) award.
