Growing Kids Therapy Center hasn't added a story.
Here we grow again...
Our nest is cozy, but it’s time to fly the coop! Imagine a space to host local, visiting, and virtual community members with equal ease. The perfect opportunity has arrived JUST AHEAD of our financial forecast. However, we’ve decided to spread our wings and go for it!
Would you consider making a donation toward the expansion of our current footprint? Here is what your generous contribution will support:
- First floor, fully accessible suite
- Extra large conference room for groups, training and community activities
- Purposefully equipped gym/work out space for whole body fitness
- Flexible therapy space for visiting specialists (ex. Music therapists, Vision specialists, etc)
- Creative space to support student led or inspired initiatives
- Enhanced workspace for clinicians, educators, and ACTS Professional interns
- Smart technologies to strengthen virtual community outreach
- Therapy rooms dedicated to elements of Universal Design for Learning (space matches goal, offers digital resources and materials, highlights learning process, ensures access to target goals)
- Same friendly, downtown Herndon, Virginia office building!
Acceptance. Change. Access. Appreciation!
All contributors who choose to offer their name (ex. the name of their speller, their family name, their business name, etc.) will be included in commemorative materials. We plan to display a plaque of those who contributed to this effort. Further, as GKTC enters our tenth year in operation, we plan to display the names of those who contributed in materials including, but not limited to, commemorative reception guest book and 2019 annual calendar.
What is Spelling to Communicate?
#S2C teaches individuals with motor challenges the purposeful motor skills necessary to point to letters to spell as an alternative means of communication (AAC). The goal is to achieve synchrony between the brain and body. Skilled and rigorously trained communication partners teach purposeful motor skills using a hierarchy of verbal and gestural prompts. As motor skills improve through consistent practice, students progress from pointing to letters on letterboards to spell to typing on a keyboard. Accordingly, communication moves from concrete to abstract as motor skills progress.
About Growing Kids Therapy Center
GKTC is dedicated to teaching non-speaking, minimally speaking and unreliably speaking individuals how to Spell to Communicate (S2C). GKTC has an interdisciplinary team that includes language pathology, occupational therapy, and education to meet the needs of our clients with motor and sensory differences. We believe that communication and motor control leads to autonomy, independence and inclusion.
