‘Piece of dynamic work that felt accessible as a language and performance’ Audience of R&D 12th June 2014
‘The intonation of movement, dynamic speeds and sounds created visually stunning montages.’ Audience of R&D 12th June 2014
‘I smiled widely and often, a rare and precious thing.’ Audience of R&D Video at Bow Arts, July 2014
Family Portrait, a new dance work directed by Leila McMillan and created in collaboration with 7 dancers, musician/composer, and a team of designers. The work passes through a constellation of family portraits through pure movement. Our family unfolds before your eyes and characters emerge illustrating love, conflict, humour, dysfunction and harmony. Solutions present themselves in the moment. As our audience you will be so close, you will feel the whirling energy of the dancers as wind brushing against your skin.
The work has been in development for over 2 years and we now finally have the opportunity to create and perform the show. The creation of Family Portrait will take place over 5 weeks between 11th May – 12th June 2015 in London with a final performance on 12th June at Greenwich Dance, London. We’ve received funding from Arts Council England to cover the bulk of the creation cost, and we have a great amount of support from Greenwich Dance, London Contemporary Dance School and Muxima. Even with all this support behind us we still need to raise £3,000 to help with the final creation of the show, which is where you can help!!!
From your donations we will be able to…
- support the lighting designer to work with a technician to develop a tour ready light rider alongside the creation of a bespoke chandelier.
- support filming and editing of promotional trailer and full length version of the show for pubclity.
Remember any amount will help... as well there are some great perks to go along with your docnation! By supporting our project you will help us bring Family Portrait to life!
The work will be created in collaboration with the current dancer artists: Faith Prendergast, Karl Fagerlun Brekke, Karolina Kraczkowska, Mansoor Ali, Martha Pasakopoulou and Typhaine Delaup. We will work with musician/composer, Domenico Angarano, to develop an original sound score to be performed live; Filmmaker, Emma Crouch, and photographer, Manuel Vazquez, will document the process and capture the final performance. We will work with a team of designers – Lighting by Emerald Faerie including creation of a bespoke chandelier, costume and art direction Paolo Fiorentini and stage design by I Carlos - forming part of the overall artistic design of the show.
All artists, venues and partnerships are confirmed for the project. The artists can't wait to get in the studio to create the show, and you can help this happen!
The work will be seen on the following dates and venues:
11th June 2015, Preview at Greenwich Dance
12th June 2015, Final Performance at Greenwich Dance
31st July 2015, Film at The Apartment, Bow Arts
And then throughout 2015 and 2016!

The work arose from a 4 week development period in May/June 2014 of David Zambrano’s Flying Low (focuses mainly on the dancer’s relationship with the floor) and Passing Through (an improvisation technique working with the philosophy that movement needs no leader in creation) techniques supported by the Arts Council England, Greenwich Dance, Tripspace Projects and Muxima.
