Who We AreRealLivePeople is a Philadelphia-based dance company that explores human experiences through firsthand stories and unspoken gestures; we focus on the spaces between, the quick look away and the light tap on the shoulder. Our work strives to balance inventive, athletic movement with poignant and provocative interactions that resonate with an audience. We tackle our subject matter from multiple perspectives, collaborating with composers, artists and filmmakers and even incorporating our audience’s opinions and stories into the work in real time. For us the work is about being human onstage—part performance, part real-life.
Would I lie to you?
We recently spent a week in the woods of northern New Jersey in a residency made possible by White Pines Productions, and what we re-discovered there is simple. We really like what we do. A valuable affirmation, yes? However, what was so incredible about that week was the time and space it afforded us to really dig into this new project as an ensemble.
'Would I lie to you?', like previous work by RealLivePeople, is an exploration of our sense of identity and common humanity. But this time it’s all about lying: who we lie to, when we lie most often and how we feel about it.
Rather than asking these personal questions to strangers we’ve stayed a bit closer to home: each of the dancers tracked his or her lies and reported them back to the group. From there I, Gina, conducted an interview with each dancer about his or her lying habits – the text from these interviews forms a large portion of the sound score for the piece.
What we’ve learned so far is this: pretty much everyone lies all the time but we feel really differently about it. Some dancers believe that their lives would be better if they never lied while others believe that lying is a necessary part of many of their relationships and interactions – it keeps thing cordial. There are also discussions about cheating, familial patterning, text/email deceit, chronic exaggeration and long term self-delusion. It’s kind of juicy.
We dance to the sound of ourselves talking about what liars we are. We follow verbal improvisation structures that often reveal surprising truths about a dancer in real time. We ask audience members to anonymously submit a lie they've told, and we make a dance about it. Oh, and there’s a lot of exciting, ambitious and full-bodied dancing.
Your Help
We are a small, young, talented dance company. We have the drive, the organizational abilities and the artistic expertise to make this show a success. We are presenting 'Would I lie to you?' as part of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and as with any self-presented show, we must cover every cost ourselves.
This year is our first receiving funding from both the Philadelphia Cultural Fund and the Samuel S. Fels Fund, and we are more than grateful for their confidence in this project. The entire budget is approximately $14,000. We have already raised over 35% of the money through the generous support of the above organizations, and, to be safe, we are only budgeting on 25% of our income coming from ticket sales. Will you help us cover the rest? Your support will go to important, real things:
-
Artist fees for the dancers: Gina Hoch-Stall, Drew Kaiser, Megan Mazarick, Sara Nye, Adrian Plascencia, Megan Quinn
-
Costumes and the work of our talented costume designer Michelle Yeager
-
Rented lights and the work of Maria Shaplin, our innovative lighting designer
-
Other crucial staff: Dramaturg Jenna Stelmok, Technical Director A.J. Garrigus, Stage Manager Angie Coleman, photography and videography services
-
Space rental for performance

The Impact
As a small company we often face challenges with funding and scheduling but what we do not lack is talent, creativity and an eye for making dance exciting to watch. 'Would I lie to you?' is by far our most ambitious and exciting project to date. The act of giving towards this project tells us, “Yes, I affirm that this sounds interesting, and yes, I believe is it worthwhile doing, and yes, I think that you as artists should make more work like this.” So, thank you for that vote of confidence, confidence in what we're doing now and where we could go in the future. Really. We're not lying about that part. We are truly grateful.
