There are 11,000 people who live in and around the Guatemala City dump.  These people rely on garbage to survive.  They rely on it as a source of income, items for their homes and even for food.  The average “scavenger” as they are called by some make around $3 per day.  These living conditions affect the people in every imaginable way including spiritually, physically, and emotionally.

Potter’s House is a Guatemalan organization that works with the people of the dump (or “treasures” as they call them) every single day.  For the past three years a team from BCF has gone to Guatemala City working with a US non-profit known as Beyond the Walls to serve alongside Potters House in reaching the Treasures for Jesus Christ.  This year a team of 14 will travel to Guatemala City to once again do what we can to serve the people of the community.  We will work with Potter’s House to build two houses for local families, show love to the kids in their after school program (including our sponsor kids) by taking them to a local amusement park (the first time any of them had ever been to such a place), put on a baseball clinic, renovate two homes, deliver food and medicine to families in the community, and share the gospel with people in the community through prayer walks.

Most of the families in the dump community live in houses made of cardboard and corrugated metal with dirt floors.  By building small cinderblock homes with cement floors and iron doors, running water and indoor toilets, the families are provided with improved sanitary conditions, safety, security and dignity.  By providing beds to families, children who were once sleeping on a dirt floor now have a bed to sleep in.  By showing the people God’s love, we earn the right to speak into their lives and share the good news.  They are told how God loves them and how Christ died for them.   So many of them believe the lie that they are no better than the garbage they scavenge.  To be begin to believe that they are indeed valuable to God, and that a better life is possible, is a wonderful message of hope.

We are asking for small donations (even $1 helps!) for construction materials to build these homes.  All of the money donated through this website will go DIRECTLY for construction materials for the homes that we will build.  Thank you for considering it!
