As many of you know I volunteered in Uganda in 2009 where I met the women, men, and children of House of Hope who have forever changed my life. This August I will finally be returning!

As many of you know I volunteered in Uganda in 2009 where I met the women, men, and children of House of Hope who have forever changed my life. This August I will finally be returning!

House of Hope Orphanage and the Globalize Action Junior School was orphanage and school began in 2005 by a Ugandan woman named Jenifer Tumwizere. Over the years the school and orpanage have struggled to stay open. Before I arrived in 2009, villagers burned down a large portion of the buildings - it was suspected that the town was unhappy with a woman opening and running a school. The orphanage is currently home to about 50 children and many more live with a caretaker in nearby villages and walk up to two hours to attend school. As of 2014, 320 children from the orphanage and the surrounding villages attend school, ranging in age from 3-17.

Over the years, thanks to the tireless efforts of volunteers and the newly-formed charity, House of Hope Uganda Inc., the children have seen some conditions improve. Orphans have gone from sleeping in hammocks to proper beds. A well was installed allowing for more sanitary lavatory conditions and less time away from school to gather water. House of Hope has seen progress but there is much more work to be done.

I am raising funds to give to the school when I arrive which will assist with:

  • Food for the children (orphans and students are fed a snack and one meal daily; for some it is their only meal of the day)
  • School uniforms (children receive one uniform and for many that is one of their only forms of clothing)
  • Books and school supplies
  • Medicine (many children have HIV/AIDS, TB, digestive problems, and other illnesses that are often untreated)

After my last trip was cancelled due to safety concerns, I am beyond thrilled to be returning to House of Hope to see my children. I have sponsored one of the students for the past few years, paying for her education, and will be visiting her (Shallon) as she is now in secondary school - a moment I cannot wait for!

I ask that you find it in your heart to donate what you can as I try to raise money for the school. No donation is too small! My sincerest thanks and love to you all!

(I will be sending updates from my trip, including photos!)

Love,

Lauren
