No Paw Left Behind of The United States, Inc hasn't added a story.
Thank you to everyone who has come forward to show their support for the sad situation this morning involving over 60 dogs and cats in Miami. We urge everyone to support all rescues involved in helping care for these pets, and continue to help responsible rescues in South Florida. Without your support, we could not be here to save lives.
This morning several volunteers from a few different rescues, including one volunteer from No Paw Left Behind, were asked to assist in a situation involving the arrest of a local rescuer. Most of the dogs in this house had ben previously “rescued” from Miami Dade Animal Services. Many were physically in acceptable condition, while others were found in severe stages of distress. The pets were found to be housed in three main areas separated by baby gates. Some were in kennels. The floors were relatively clean and weewee pads were on the floor. Some pets had water while others did not have access to water. Many dogs were either too old, chronically disabled or blind to make their way to the water or walk around through the 20+ other competing dogs in the same areas.
No Paw Left Behind volunteer assisted in completing an inventory of all pets on the premises. She then chose several cases to bring into our rescue, described below. She also packed up several others pets in critical conditions and taxied them to emergency veterinary clinics around Miami. The pets now in our custody are still at our veterinary office, being fully assessed and receiving medical care.
Most of these pets were formerly rescued from our local shelter. They were pulled by several different rescues and ended up in this house. This is not the time for spreading hatred – this is the time for our rescue community to do some heavy thinking about what it means to be responsible rescue organizations. As a community we must do better. We must demand better for our pets and we must demand everyone be held responsible for their actions in the process of saving lives. Rescue does not end when the pet is pulled from the shelter and we must all be more receptive to working with each other as a team. Today’s events were made possible because so many rescues and independent agencies come together. Moving forward we need to help each other and make sure if a rescue organization gets into trouble, we are there to help.
How you can help:
- Fosters. Depending on the status of each pet, for now the main need is fosters. If you are interested in adopting, you may foster to adopt and once custody is determined the adoption process can move forward.
- Donate. Every pet is being evaluated and will need thorough medical care. This will run into the thousands, every dollar donated brings us all closer to our goal of restoring quality of life.
- Get involved. Our community has thousands of dogs and cats looking for forever homes. Please open your heart and home to an adopted pet.
- Speak up! Let your news stations, your commissioners, everyone you know how much you care for the wellbeing of pets. Together we can make a difference for our pets in need!
