Lori Chapek-Carleton hasn't added a story.
My Samoyed Davy bloated on March 14th; he'd eaten a normal breakfast and I let him in the back yard as always, but when calling him back into the house, he stood unsteadily with his back arched, sides tight, and he was panting. I rushed him to my regular vet, who didn't initially suspect bloat, but quickly recommended he go to Michigan State University's local small animal veterinary emergency clinic. When I drove him there, they said they would perform surgery immediately, without waiting for tests or further evaluation.
Davy survived surgery, but his recovery is taking longer than anticipated, as he continues to need supplemental oxygen and is fighting off a persistant infection so is on various medications. The doctors and I remain optimistic for a full recovery and Davy is such a fighter and has become a favorite of those in the emergency treatment ward.
On the advise of a friend, I applied to SamUrgency for assistance, and am extremely grateful for the donation they gave me towards Davy's expenses, though his veterinary bill has far exceeded what they were able to donate.
Complicating matters, on my way to visit him yesterday, the brakes gave out on my only form of transport--my 1998 Montana minivan, which has over 300,000 miles on it. I changed course to get to an auto repair shop before they closed (this happened after 4 PM); no one was available to work on it yesterday, but at the shop I took it it, I was told that the brake lines had gone, as well as the gas line, and that the tank of gas would likely completely drain overnight; and that it was leaking in multiple places and the gas couldn't be collected (they tried). they said the minivan was unsafe to drive. Public transportation isn't an option during my work hours--the buses aren't running that early, though I am catching a ride to work (an hour early) with a co-worker this morning, and will wait to hear what the auto shop tells me when they call later today.
Priority is to cover Davy's vet bills; secondary is to raise enough funds to repair or replace my vehicle. Been living hand-to-mouth for some time and have been able to continue as long as no unexpected major expenses come up. Unfortunately, have been hit with a nearly simultaneous one-two punch, and a variety of other problems, which have contributed to an ongoing downward financial spiral, despite my best efforts to keep treading water.
It's humiliating to have to ask for help, but here I am, hat in hand. I would be grateful for any assistance anyone is able to give. Believe me, am trying to earn more, sell off unwanted and unneeded personal items, look for a second job, etc. At this point, cannot offer any "perks" other than my heartfelt thanks for anyone with the compassion and wherewithal to contribute to the cause; should funds raised exceed expenses, I will pay it forward.
