Home Free Animal Rescue has always been known as the group that takes
the underdogs, the last ones on the list that are next in line to be
put to sleep, the ones that have medical or other issues, the ones
that no one else wants.
We are also the rescue group that tries
to keep adoptions simple, fun and affordable. What that means is that
we don't make money doing this. Actually, the costs are quite
staggering.
Each dog that comes into our rescue incurs expenses,
beginning with a shelter "pull fee" which ranges from
$50-100. Then there are vet fees to spay/neuter, vaccinate, microchip,
fecal test for parasites, deworm, and sometimes more serious issues
like treating heart worm disease or skin disorders or kennel cough or
urinary tract infections - the list of maladies that a shelter dog can
have is a long one. Then there is sometimes a fee for boarding until
transport, and of course the cost of transport. For dogs in NJ, most
come without vetting, so we are responsible for spay/neuter,
vaccinations and microchip and all of the other above-referenced vet
tests and treatments but at a much higher cost than can be had down
south. And then there are the dogs who begin to reveal their issues -
psychological scars from difficult pasts. Those dogs are more than our
volunteer fosters can handle and they need specialized training which
is not inexpensive. On average, each dog costs about $200.
Right
now we have 27 animals in our rescue, so figure we've already spent
around $5,400 to save those animals. They have all been to the vet,
some ongoing. Some have been transported, Three are in paid training
at $140 per week EACH. The modest donations and adoption fees we
receive simply can't keep up with the bills. We know everyone wants us
to save more and more, and we've had the capacity to take them in, but
until we move them out to forever homes, we still have to cover the
initial costs, and more costs continue to accrue. Visits to our own
local vet last week amounted to more than $500, including Mama Madison
pictured here, who has an ongoing bacterial skin infection.
So with our Wade Hampton vet bill alone more than $3,900, our trainer's bill well over $1,000, and our regular transport bill outstanding at $600 with another run coming on Saturday, we are at the point where we must BEG for your help.
If each of our Facebook friends gave just $2.50 we would be paid off completely. That's less than a Starbuck's coffee. If you simply can't afford even $1, please network all of our loving pets so that they can be adopted and their adoption fees will go toward paying down the balances.
