I'm off to Johannesburg in September to do six weeks' voluntary work in Door Of Hope, a home for abandoned babies and toddlers.
It has been running since 1999, when a group of women in a Church in Hillbrow heard of the growing number of babies being dumped on rubbish tips, down man holes, in the river, etc. Then the monthly total was around 20 per month. Now the figure has increased to 200 per month.
Door Of Hope is now a registered charity, but due to the nature of the area, they rely soley on donations of everything - from the computer in the admin office to formula milk and nappies. They also rely heavily on volunteers. This isn't a government or social services initiative, it's simply a group of women who saw a need and decided to meet it. I think this is admirable.
The babies are taken in - some through the baby bin and some referred by the local authorities, and cared for until they are adopted by "Forever Families" or placed in orphanages. Door Of Hope obviously aims to have a high turnover of babies so they can keep up with the growing demand and save more lives.
I need to raise the money to cover my flights, two months' rent at home whilst I'm gone, my travel insurance and six weeks worth of sun cream. I really hope to raise more than I need, as then I will be able to donate it to Door Of Hope when I get there. They are particularly desperate for smart clothes for the children to meet their "Forever Families" in and surgical gloves. I would like to take some with me, but I feel it more important to raise the money so they can buy it themselves, and therefore help them AND their local economy.
I am doing a sponsored "Wine-and-Chocolate-free-Month" from 15th July-15th August, and holding a few cake sales. PLEASE PLEASE either sponsor me or donate anyway. I'm desperate to get out there and love and care for these beautiful babies, even if it is only for six weeks.
