My name is Roe Gasi. I would like to someday return to my home country Sudan to give musical and religious education to the children of my village. I am trying to raise money to help with my musical education at the Portland Conservatory of Music so that I can go on to study music in college next year.
I was born in Southern Sudan, 3 miles away from the town of Yambio. I grew up on a farm, going to elementary school, which I did not finish because of the war. I left my family during the war to escape to Cario. Circumstances there helped bring me to the US in 2004. Since coming here, I have been working hard in school and supporting myself by working in a hospital. I recently was awarded my GED.
I have always loved music, especially gospel music. In our town in Sudan, we used to have a small church where we would sing in the choir. I still sing for myself or in church. I decided to begin studying piano about a year ago, taking lessons at the Portland Conservatory of Music, so that I could write down my hymns and songs, transforming songs in my language into something I could play on the piano.
I would like to teach the children back home in the church - that is my ambition and prayer. Now I’m studying here at PCM.
Life is very difficult for me right now. Sometimes it is hard to describe - I work hard to pay my rent, my bills, and school, without getting any financial help. Sometimes I think I should go back home to Sudan, but then I realize that will not be helpful for me and I need to finish school. I want to be able to teach music and biblical studies to the children back home. I know for sure God did not change my heart for myself, but for other people, so it is easier for me to handle the struggles in life. I need to go back and help all the people, and especially children.
I believe God helps us as we experience life’s troubles. We know that we will all face difficulties in life and the issue is how we will respond - we can be crushed by them or we can grow through them. God is God of all comfort and encourages, consoles, and enables us to endure trouble and suffering. There is nothing we can encounter for which God is not able to supply consolation. Seeing life’s trouble from God’s perspective as opportunities instead of problems will enable us to endure them and grow in Christ’s likeness.
I’m trying to raise money to cover my piano studies at PCM and I appreciate any assistance you can help. I will appreciate those who help me with this education. They will be in my heart.
