Two years ago, I found myself alone in a city park, hours past midnight, my knuckles white from my tight grip around my phone. On the other line was the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-8255), and the call duration timer was approaching an hour -- an hour which I had spent on hold.

I had hit a low point in my life, and I thought suicide was my only escape. I had made two attempts that night before I finally made a call to the lifeline. After an hour, no one picked up the phone. But I did have many friends who cared and loved me deeply who rescued me that night. Without my family and friends, I would have been another victim of suicide, and another precious life would have been robbed from this world.

Suicide is an ugly topic, but it is a real and rising problem in our world. Suicide prevention and awareness efforts are understaffed and underfunded. I was lucky enough that night. Another person may not have survived that hour on hold. It is scary, and it is lonely. But there is hope.

I am raising funds to donate to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a nonprofit organization which funds research for suicide prevention, and offers education programs about depression and suicide for teenagers, college students, people in medical professions, and other high-risk groups. A small donation can help rescue someone from the darkness, and bring awareness to many communities.

All proceeds will be donated to the AFSP.
