Your share could raise $30
Before you go, did you know that simply by sharing this campaign, you could help it raise $30? It's an effective way to support the cause.
No thanksWest Coast Kids Cancer Foundation hasn't added a story.
100MenWhoCareVancouver awarded us $10,000 and we received $5,000 from Freestyle Fitness BC's Longest Day Run - now we need you to help us raise our last $5,000! Can you help us make unicorns, safaris, and carnivals happen for kids living with or beyond cancer or blood disorders and their siblings?
We are here to tell you the story of MORE -MORE support for kids living with and beyond cancer/blood disorders and their families. MORE opportunities for those families to make meaningful memories without costing them. MORE community for families that feel isolated or helpless. MORE love for families struggling to live a meaningful life with cancer and blood disorders. We are ready to challenge the status quo and City Camp is our first step.
Through our Day Camps, children with blood disorders and their siblings can play all day, while still being within 5 minutes from a hospital and watched over by camp councilors, 3 nurses, and a medical resident at all times. Families get the comfort of knowing their children can share childhood summer memories while being in safe hands - this program is offered for free to all families living with or beyond childhood cancer and blood disorders!
The Vision
So, imagine this – a family has received the blow of a cancer diagnosis …their sweet 7 year old has to face rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, needles and months in a hospital room. For one week this summer, that child can walk across the parking lot of BC Children’s Hospital, one hand holding Mom’s hand and the other holding their older brother’s hand. They arrive to a gym full of other kids, some still on treatment trailing IV poles, some off treatment, siblings running free from the boredom of ipads, hospital hallways, and quiet rooms. A volunteer greets each child by name and instantly both kids are tie-dying t-shirts, building with Lego and settling into a full day of fun. Mom catches the eye of the nurse who took care of her child yesterday in the hospital. She’ll be there all day to ensure every medical need is taken care of. Mom exhales and walks out the door, lighter than she’s been in months and has to decide if she’ll go for a run or get a coffee first.
The Impact
There is currently no program like this in BC. It is essential to offer a program that allows kids to play all day and return to the comfort of their own bed or the reassurance of the hospital each night. We are offering more than camp. We are offering hope, joy, community, reprieve.
The Cost
The cost to send a kid to City Camp is $500/kid ($100/day) and covers:
- all food,
- medical supplies,
- medical staff,
- transportation,
- highly skilled leaders and
- essential program supplies like bubbles, paint, water guns, slime and other key ingredients for the perfect magic summertime experience.
