Amanda Fitzpatrick hasn't added a story.
Hello my name is Amanda Fitzpatrick (Howard). I live in Magoffin County Kentucky. Over the past few years my little family has been through many hardships. First I was in a very serious automobile accident and almost lost my left arm. Before my wounds were even healed from the car wreck my sweet mother was put in the hospital with complications from COPD and put on a ventilator.
For the last 2 and a half years I have been by her side through many different hospitals and rehab centers. To be able to care for my Mommy I had to abandon my home, job, and all other obligations in order to be able to stay with Mommy during her last days. Unfortunately they were unable to ween my mother from the vent so while she was in the last long term care facility, we rented a trailer in Rockcastle County so that I could stay there and take the necessary training to bring my mother home on the machine. She so desperately wanted to come home to puncheon creek and I wanted to make her final wish a reality, and I did make sure she got to spend her last days at home where she was comfortable and close to the people she loved.
She spent another Thanksgiving, Christmas. And birthday at home. She even got to see her first grandchild Jeffery whom she hadn’t seen in many years and meet his lovely wife. She got to have all her children under one roof again…which made her very happy. She also got to spend time with her newest great grandbaby Blake and her first great grand Makenzie. She also got to spend time with and get to know my baby boy Mikey and the day she died they napped together in her bed and she was thrilled to have him snuggled so close to her.
We lived in a rental property here in Magoffin County where I cared for my mother, my angel Mommy passed away on February 17th during a snow storm, EMTs had trouble reaching us due to the snow so I performed CPR on my Mommy for over an hour in a futile attempt to save her already fragile life.
My mother’s death devastated me and I am still not the same and probably never will be. She was a huge part of my life, my best friend, my biggest fan, and supporter. I didn’t even get the proper time to grieve for my devastating loss because things just kept coming at us one after another.
Shortly after her death my baby boy "lil" Mikey started to have mild seizures. The seizures worsened and I felt that the Drs I had been talking to about the problem weren’t taking it very serious so when he had 3 in a span of 2 hours I packed up his bag and took him to UK where he ended up having 18 seizures in a 24 hour period before they finally gave him medication and got them somewhat under control. After many trips to the Drs and hospitals we discovered he has a rare brain disorder that will require brain surgery. Due to his disability my son requires constant supervision. He will be 4 years old on sept 2nd but due to his condition he can only say a few words and suffers from several other developmental delays and problems. It’s hard to leave him with anyone even for a short time. His father and I have our own ways of communicating with him and he gets very frustrated and can’t understand why when he is with other people they can’t understand what he wants when daddy and I can.
I cannot return to work at this time because my son is so attached to me that leaving him with a babysitter even for an hour or two causes him such distress that he takes screaming tantrums so severe that they could and sometimes do trigger seizures.
If all this is not bad enough, last month I was visited by social services. I was in the process of repairing the trailer that was our home 3 years ago prior to my mother’s illness. The home stood vacant for 3 years so of course it needed a lot of work. My husband had knee replacement surgery 3 days before the day our lease was up on our previous rental home.
We had been staying place to place for the last couple months while we worked on the trailer as best we could with my husband’s surgery and subsequent complications and me having to constantly supervise lil Mikey it has been hard to get everything in order.
Since my husband’s unemployment ran out and he is unable to work at this time, financial difficulties are also stalling the repairs. I am currently staying with my brother Greg with lil Mikey, I am very thankful for his and his family’s hospitality but I desperately need to have a place of my own so my little family can be all together again. .
I have worked my whole life since I was 15 years old. I have never had to ask for help from strangers …but at this time I see no other way to make it and I am praying and hoping that God will put this story in some of your hearts and you will help me and my sweet baby boy. He loves his Mommy and Daddy so very much and not being able to see his Daddy as much as he is accustomed to has been very hard on him. I have to try to keep him calm and in a familiar, structured environment to lessen the threat of more seizures. He needs to be at home with both his Mommy and Daddy where he is comfortable, safe and happy.
The Social services will not allow me to bring the baby back to the trailor until several major repairs are made, I am not even allowed to bring him there while I come to work on things. She also threatened me that she could take the baby simply because I am a “transient” because I am staying with family and not moved into a place of my own. I asked her for assistance and she informed me that there were no programs to assist me anymore. She told me to go stay in a homeless shelter.
Please help my little family we are desperately in need and have nowhere else to turn for help. Any donation will be greatly appreciated no matter the size. Also if any of my friends and neighbors reading this have any extra building materials or would simply like to donate their time to help with building and repairs please let me know.
We have several appointments coming up in September with Mikey’s neurologist in Lexington and we also need help with travel expenses.
Thank you in advance and may God bless each of you for helping a very sweet, special little guy and his family. Any money raised will go strictly to repairing our home and travel to my babys Dr appointments.
God has told me to do this and I will get the help I need, although its hard for me to put my personal life out there and ask strangers for help...I am obeying and standing on faith. So I hope if God puts it on your heart to help that you will listen…I believe he is going to send me some angels here in earth to help me and my baby boy get back to our home where we belong.
Sincerely
Amanda Jo Fitzpatrick (Howard)
