Debbie Park Bobshosky hasn't added a story.
I was alerted to Kiko by a concerned rescue friend 'Carol' back in mid-Sept. Carol works with Lani who is the girlfriend of Kiko's owner Mitch. Lani apparently has been asking anyone if they wanted a dog that couldn't walk anymore and incontinent because they don't have the time to care for him anymore and was going to have him euthanized soon, without knowing the cause and if there's treatment available.
After sharing Kiko's sad and urgent story on Facebook on 10/15th, rescue angels Mona and Kathy contacted Eldad with Hope for Paws to ask for financial support for his medical needs...and he said YES to just the 2 initial exams/treatment! On 10/18th when I went to pick Kiko up from his owners home to get examined by a good vet, I was led to the back yard where he was laying on a piece of plywood under the patio, covered in his urine and feces, whimpering as if he was in pain, and a empty rusty water bowl nearby. I was disgusted and traumatized to say the least...poor Kiko. According to his owners, he's been in this condition for approx 9+ months and couldn't even drag himself around anymore! In Nov when we finally received Kiko's vet records from his owners vet, it stated they last took him to get examined in Sept and maggots were all over him!! Their vet also diagnosed him with just having arthritis...obviously not a very good vet either! :-(
Kiko was examined by a very good vet and a neurologist, and sadly they recommended euthanizing him for various reasons (may have DM, poor quality of life, etc). With advice given by rescue friends, it was decided it wasn't Kiko's time to cross the Rainbow Bridge just yet. It also wasn't an option to take Kiko back to his owners to live in those horrid conditions he was found, while I networked him for a foster/rescue, a new forever home or sanctuary. Both Mitch and Lani happily surrendered him to me. So I reached out to my friend Leigh Ann Conway w/ The Kris Kelly Foundation and asked if Kiko can be boarded at Huntington Pet Vet (HPV) until further notice using her rescue account and pay down the balance with donations received...she said YES! Dr. Naito at HPV wanted to try and help Kiko as well after meeting and examining him personally. She agreed it wasn't his time. In early Dec Kiko's test result for DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) unfortunately came back positive but Dr. Naito and everyone at HPV still believes he's getting stronger each day and feel he can have a good quality life with the right person or rescue.
So Kiko's been 'hangin out' on a nice bed in the Treatment Room of HPV, not kenneled, and getting lots of TLC from the entire staff who has fallen in love with this special soul. He's been getting several treatments of Acupuncture and Laser each week to stimulate his muscles and a custom wooden cart was built just for Kiko to help build back muscle in his front legs and so he can experience walking and running again. Kiko's BFF Robby, Brenda and staff at HPV have been walking him 4-7 times per day in his cart and he's having a ball! Other angels on 'Team Kiko', Renee & Jennifer, have been temp fostering him for short periods whenever possible so he can experience a healthy home life and to keep cost down at HPV. Kara has also generously offered to give Kiko free water therapy treatments in a heated pool at her home. He has become strong enough for his own standard custom wheelchair which he started using in mid-Dec.
With all this TLC and treatments that Kiko's been receiving since 10/18th, he is not the same dog. He is getting stronger each day, full of life, and can't stop smiling!!! Thank goodness he wasn't euthanized! It is an incredible transformation in such a short amount of time. Check out all his pics and videos from then and now and see for yourself. Many thanks to Mary Siani who also did a complimentary professional doggie photoshoot recently to help network him.
I would like to continue treatments for Kiko at HPV until a good foster/rescue or new forever home is found. Thankfully Jennifer will continue to temp foster him 2 weeks of every month. Another angel on 'Team Kiko', Gina Gould offered an incredible treatment called AcuScope at a rescue discount of $65/Treatment and recommended approx 10+ treatments for Kiko. I desperately need your help to pay his ongoing bill at HPV of $37.50/Day plus medications, etc. until another place is found for him. I am confident that goal is in the near future as he's such an awesome and lovable boy!
