My ultimate dream is to start a program like SEEDs in the Brattleboro community. While I'd love to jump right into it and start teaching, I believe that certification is necessary to ensure that all program participants are getting the highest level of care possible! This kickstarter is to help me raise the funds necessary to get certified to successfully teach and run this transformative & therapeutic bellydance program!
About the SEEDs Program:
- The SEEDS program accepts 25 teen girls for one academic year of after school classes, 1.5 hours, 3x per week. The girls are taught elements of American Tribal Style dance, a rich, artistic, and cultural dance that spans the regions of India, The Middle East, North Africa, and Spain.
- The girls also participate in talking circles and journal writing, during which they discuss the issues affecting them in everyday life.
- Each girl identifies a personal goal she would like to achieve during the course of the program.
- Guest speakers are invited to cover a wide range of topics from nutrition and body awareness to basic financial education, etc.
- Influential women from the community that are of particular interest to the girls, address the girls each week.
- Participants in the program have the opportunity to learn and perform bellydance in an encouraging, welcoming environment.
- Entrance into the program does not depend on demonstrated talent, standard beauty, or ability to pay the fees the program would require.
Through this program, the goal for each girl is:
- To find her own voice and be able to listen to it.
- To have better self-esteem and confidence.
- To be able to plan and achieve goals, generate choices, create options,
- resources and support.
- To be ready to face financial independence.
- To have respect, appreciation and be able to care for her own body.
- To respect, appreciate and be able to care for others in community.
- To respect and appreciate diversity and culture.

Do you think the Brattleboro community would benefit from a program like this? If so, please consider donating even just a small amount. With certification, this idea is one step closer to becoming a reality! Teacher training takes place the first weekend of June 2015! :)
A little bit about me...
I grew up in California with parents who were severly addicted to drugs and alcohol. This made my teen years a struggle--as I had little foundation or self confidence. I never imagined myself going to college, nevermind getting my masters degree or becoming a bellydancer!
But with the help of a few of my family members, I made it to college, and in 2009 I started bellydancing with Shakti Tribal Dance.
Bellydancing transformed the way I approach life, and it showed me a way to express my femininity with confidence and grace. Bellydance gave me a support system and a vision for the future that I never could have imagined. It provided me with a network of sisters that I still lean on for help when I need it. I'm so thankful for all of my teachers and fellow dance sisters who contributed to my journey and helped me become more than an "at risk youth."
I would love to help other girls from similar situations make it through that particularly hard part of life, and am dedicated to bringing this life-changing program to Brattleboro, where there is so much need.
