Disaster Strikes Mission Church! This Mission Congregation
is struggling to survive after trusting their Church Treasurer who was disguised as a “Sheep in Wolf’s clothing”. Now they need your help! Here is their story. This story all began when ...

their treasurer, who grew up in the church and was trusted by the members not only  embezzled church funds but approached the elderly members of the church for individual contributions cheating them out of $100,000.

Spirit of the Desert Church - www.spiritofthedesert.org - is an LCMC mission congregation that was founded by members of former Calvary Lutheran church, the 2nd oldest Lutheran Congregation in Las Vegas which was established in 1957. The forming of this new mission congregation was a direct result of the actions by the former church treasurer. This former member is being pursued by federal prosecutors who feel he deceived the church by unlawfully leveraging mortgages against the property. He also embezzled 1.75 million of the church funds into his personal accounts and extorted all of the church funding and property through his deception, which in turn led to the closure of Calvary. Subsequently, the remaining members began the mission congregation, Spirit of the Desert Church, in 2009 which has been struggling ever since. Unfortunately this heinous crime has left the church insolvent, with no money to move forward. Only their faithful pastor and a few dozen of committed individuals remain to continue to keep the light of Christ alive in their hearts.

Since the loss of the church property, the church has met in numerous locations. It now holds services in a rented triple-wide trailer on a piece of rented land. Water is borrowed from the neighbor, and a diesel generator is rented for electricity. The pastor and staff remain unpaid. They are committed to the journey of building a congregation in this church-lacking community.

Lawsuits have been filed and indictments have been issued, but the recovery period is painfully slow and can take several years. Though it appears that Satan is doing everything in his power to prevent this church from building in this community, the small congregation continues to persevere despite the obstacles brought before them. The congregation members believe the vision and mission is inspired by God, and with God's help they will be able to make a difference and allow God's word to be spread within the community.

This congregation has a vision to develop an outreach ministry, low income 24/7 childcare facility, and a senior citizen housing project. Unfortunately these visions have come to a halt at the hands of a villain that unscrupulously extorted all of the funds, leaving the church depleted. But, the light of God continues within the dozens that remain, to surge forward, and try any way possible to achieve the vision that God has put before them.

We are pleading with all fellows Christians to help support our mission in any way possible. Your contributions can allow this congregation to fulfill its vision and help spread God's word to our community. "Time is running out for this congregation - even though HOPE and TRUST in GOD's AMAZING GRACE continues to be their guiding force", the congregation's Pastor shares.   "Now they must depend on the goodness and the generosity of people everywhere to help keep the VISION alive"!

Below are  a couple newspaper articles to explain more of the church's tragic story.  Go to the bottom of the page and please take  a couple minutes to listen to the Youtube Video from the local television news.
