The focus of my Power of One school project is to help spread awareness about the issues regarding the rainforests as well as to raise money to donate to the Protect an Acre campaign. Protect an Acre is a nonprofit foundation that raises money for the Rainforest Action Network. The rainforests around the world are being lost to illegal harvesting of the trees as well as to illegal coal mining. Rainforests are a unique part of the world’s ecosystem; home to some animals found nowhere else in the entire world. The forests have a very unique climate that has caused many plants and animals to come together to create an ecosystem that is like a completely different world to the one we live in. And even though these forests are extremely limited and rare, people are going out of their way to destroy them. They are destroying an ecosystem that has been developed over millions of years, creating a perfect harmony between the plants and animals. To raise money for this campaign I will be doing a swim-a-thon where I am working to swim as much 10 miles in 8 hours or less.
