Clever Communities in Action(CCIA)is proud to present our third annual Black History Month Youth Book Drive. A project that started as a strong reaction to attending an event at a predominately Black elementary school has grown into a movement. Literacy, cultural awareness and healthy self-esteem are the driving forces. Within the last two years, with the help of fellow "Villagers" from across the country we have managed to raise over $3,000.00 in donations and deliver over 300 brand new books written specifically for African-American youth to four elementary schools.

Statistics show that children of color are more engaged in reading when presented with books in which they can identify with the characters and story-line. My personal experience of working with youth for over 15 years has proven to me that too many of our youth lack cultural pride and awareness which is a tremendous hindrance to a positive sense of self. As Black History Month approaches it reminds me of all the strides that have been made, as well as all the work that is yet to be done. We still have gaps to fill when it comes to the education of African-American youth. Reading is the foundation. Strong reading skills and a love for reading cultivates strong, competent leaders

CCIA makes the donations to the schools so that every student will have the opportunity to experience the value that the books can bring to their lives. This year, in conjunction with our annual book drive we are also conducting a fundraiser that will assist us in obtaining the funding we need to become a 501c3 non-profit organization. This will help us better carry out our mission which is to equip children and parents with tools to promote literacy, healthy self-esteem and positive communication skills through exposure to a diverse range of educational and cultural opportunities in effort to inform, inspire and empower underserved youth and communities. We have already begun this mission through our book drive and various events and programs. With your help we are destined to take it further.

Our book drive and fundraiser runs February 1-28, 2013. Donations can be made online or through the mail. We are extremely excited about taking this mission to a higher level this year. Remember strong readers make strong leaders and we look forward to your assistance in making this a reality for our youth again!
