Sara has been diagnosed with Adrenal Cancer, which occurs in one person in every two million. In the United States, about 300-500 people are diagnosed with Adrenal Carcinoma every year. During the last few months, she has experienced many different symptoms, and after numerous tests, a tumor was found on her right adrenal gland. Sara had the tumor removed on January 3, 2013 and one week later, after pathology reports came back, she was diagnosed with an aggressive and very rare cancer known as Adrenocortical Carcinoma. Adrenal cancer has a high reoccurrence rate, as well as a less than desirable survival rate. Her treatment course will consist of chemotherapy and radiation. The most common chemotherapy drug used in the treatment of Adrenal Cancer is Mitotane. Mitotane blocks hormone production by the adrenal gland and also destroys both adrenal cancer cells and healthy adrenal tissue. Sara will be taking Mitotane for at least the next two years and will lose her other adrenal gland because of this. This will cause her to have Adrenal insufficiency, which will require lifelong medication to treat. She will also have radiation treatment on top of that.
The next few years will present Sara with one of the toughest challenges of her life. Sara is a fighter, and we believe with her strength plus all the love and support from family and friends, she will radiate like the colors of the rainbow. (The ribbon for Adrenal Cancer is Rainbow colored... How perfect).
