Reyli was born on October 11, 2005 and immediately diagnosed with Arthrogryposis Syndrome, a condition of the lower extremities that cannot be corrected with Orthopedics. Our search then began for doctors to give us hope and help our child. In 2006 we found a special doctor who performed four difficult surgeries that helped release ligament stress that allowed him better range of motion and corrected his club feet. Reyli was then able to stand with the help of walker and prosthetic braces. Still, Arthrogryposis is a condition of degenerative stiffness in joints, muscles and tendons and because he is not able to fully extend his knees he is not able to build strong muscles the same as other growing children. Our goal for Reyli is ongoing and we have found a doctor that performs a special surgery called Ilizarov, a technique specifically designed for limb lengthening and deformity correction (straightening bent legs). With this surgery Reyli’s dream to walk with his brother will be a step closer. Some doctors have said that his current state of development is the best he can achieve but we now have a new hope with Ilizarov surgery. With two more surgeries our son will be able to extend his knees with the same range of motion as other children with extensive physical therapy throughout his growing years his courage can be rewarded with outstanding results. Our Reyli is a strong positive and motivated child who refuses to give up his hope of walking. He can light up a room with his smile, personality and courage. Together with his outstanding physical therapist, Reyli, his father and I have had our eyes opened to an attainable future and we cannot give up on his development. Because we live in San Antonio, TX and Reyli’s new surgeon is in Florida we need financial support for trips and very importantly the medical expenses involved. It is easy to imagine the emotional roller coaster of being told to settle for a certain level of development and the hope of great achievement through continued surgery and therapy. The door to the future is not closed to this courageous six-year-old and he deserves the opportunity to grow and develop.
