Hi there! We're the 'McDowners'!

We're a family of 4; Rob, Jen, Zoë and Sam, and we are living in Portland, Oregon. We started a family blog at the beginning of this year called 'Living Life Upside Downer'

This blog is a place where we (Jen and Rob) write honest, whimsical, and very real observations as we do our best to raise two kids (one with autism, one without). Zoë and Sam make their contributions to the blog through videos, photos, writing, art and more.

We're committed advocates for neurodiversity. We are sharing our story so that people can experience Autism from our unique perspective and hopefully see it in a different light.

Having Autism in your family is more than a full time job, it's a totally different way of life. There is no 'down time', or 'relaxing vacations' or 'chill out and lounge around the house' weekend days. With Autism, you are on the go, always adapting, and always ready 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days each year.

Sharing our story takes time & money. These are two things that are not extremely abundant for us and that's where you can help.
We currently have a fund that we call 'Sam Speaks' and through the generosity of friends, family, and people we've never met, we were able to fund more than 6 months worth of speech therapy AND offset the cost of additional out-of-pocket medical & therapy expenses.

This FundRazr campaign is part of a multi-faceted fundraising effort. We are planning on using the funds for the following:

- Occupational Therapy:
Sam's response to OT sessions is amazing. He is able to function much better while he is actively participating in regular OT sessions (emotionally, verbally, cognitively).

- Speech Therapy:
We've been on hiatus with his therapist due to a lack of funds and it is heartbreaking. Our county is out of money as budgets are in turmoil and that means that money that we could count on is no longer there. When Sam is in ST he is flourishing. New words, happier, more calm...

- New iPad Mini:
This is the one thing we're aiming for before the holidays. This device is phenomenal. It's smaller size & built-in camera will help us to better utilize the adaptive communication apps. We truly believe it will allow Sam to communicate more clearly and thus, feel less frustration and more confidence.

If you can help us with a donation, we'd be so grateful. If you can't donate and can help get the word out, we'd be so tickled!
