Dear Friends of JROTC Show your support for JROTC in San Francisco by making a donation that will help save the JROTC program. This will be an important first step in the long-term goal of making JROTC an enduring part of high school curriculum, one that will be fully staffed to teach important life skills including citizenship, discipline, teamwork, leadership, responsibility, integrity, and selfless service. JROTC programs are required to have two instructors. Only Balboa HS has two JROTC instructors, with the other city JROTC programs only having one instructor each. The Army recently placed Galileo HS and Lowell HS on probation, warning that the programs may face termination at the end of this school year if they did not add an instructor. Although the school board approved the hiring of three new instructors, they prohibited the use of district funds to pay for them. Fortunately for Lowell, its alumni association has agreed to fund the position. However, Galileo does not currently have the funds to hire an additional instructor. The addition of three new instructors is essential to the long-term health of JROTC in San Francisco. More important than just fulfilling an Army requirement, the additional instructors will strengthen the programs in those schools. Two instructors at a school means more instructor-student interaction, better instruction, more and/or better extracurricular events, and gives breathing room that teachers need to take the JROTC programs to the next level of success. Additionally, it will show our detractors that JROTC supporters (parents, alumni, students, and other civic-minded organizations) will continue to rally in support of this important program. Over the last 5 years, San Francisco JROTC has been fighting for its life. Together, we have successfully fought off efforts to terminate the program, prohibit students from getting needed graduation credits and other distractions. This fight has taken its toll. A program that was once fully staffed and able to support to all our students is now struggling to hire teachers. We are in real trouble and we need your help. State funding shortages handcuff our very supportive principals from hiring JROTC teachers. Our time line is very short; we must raise the funds to hire the new instructors by the end of September 2011. I know times are difficult, but your donation will mean that JROTC survives and grows in the San Francisco Unified School District. Without you support, JROTC will fade until it becomes just a memory. JROTC will no longer be able to grow our adolescent boys and girls into confident young men and women who know their civic responsibilities and have learned leadership skills. For some of you, this will mean that your son, daughter, niece and/or nephew will never be able to reap the benefits that JROTC gave you. Remember too that JROTC has a proven track record of higher graduation rates, GPA, college attendance, passing rates for the fitness gram test, and attendance rates, while reducing discipline problems. Please pledge your support to JROTC in San Francisco by contributing as we rally again to show that this program is too important to us and the community to let die. If you prefer to give by check you can send your tax deductible donation made out to Cathy Post American Legion (indicate JROTC in the memo section at the bottom of the check) and send it to: Cathay Post PO Box 16236 San Francisco, CA 94116
