The Tonkolili Chimpanzee Project incorporates two villages in central Sierra Leone. The main village that we work with, Marocki, recently had a horrible fire which destroyed 11 homes (about half of what the village has). The already desititute village is suffering badly as a result.

The Marocki village is very small. They have a population of less then 100, of which over half are small children. The Tonkolili Chimpanzee Project has been working with this village for several years. They have been true partners in the conservation of chimpanzees.

The Tonkolili Chimpanzee Project is a small, targetted, community-based conservation initiative in an area where chimpanzees have traditionally been killed as a result of crop raiding local communities. The TCP seeks to find community based solutions to create a commensalism between humans in chimpanzees in areas where negative encounters between the two species are frequent.

The Tonkolili Chimpanzee Project could not exist without the Marocki village. Their partnership and friendship has been the foundation of the entire intitiative
