This page has been set up solely to help people in extreme need, the first person we are helping is Ami.

Ami is a university student in Bangladesh, he blogs about humanist, secularist and atheist issues. Some people were aware of his views and often he courted public hostility for his criticism of points of Islam. But other than that he mostly cautiously carried on with his life.

Then something changed, the politics of his country started to move towards the views of the Jamaat-e-Islami party, a political party that increasingly exerts more influence. Jamaat-e-Islami's main claim to notoriety is that in 1971 they perpetrated war crimes listed by the Guinness Book of Records as amongst the five worst of the 20th century.

In 2013 the situation went from bad to worse, hostility turned to violence and increasingly atheist bloggers lived in fear of arrest from the police or public beatings by mobs. Then the killings started. Protesters marched caring banners demanding execution for atheist bloggers, prominent atheists such as Raijib Haider were murdered, Raijib himself had his head hacked off for claiming that there should be a separation of church and state. Others have been stabbed or stoned to death. These are the notable cases that made the news, for young relatively anonymous people such as Ami, life became a living Hell. He asked the police for protection, and was told to stop blogging, he did, but the violence still continued, when he approached the police again they advised that he would be arrested for being an atheist and was then beaten.

Around this time he was publicly outed.

One by one his friends disappeared as they went into hiding, some reaffirmed their faith or sadly in some cases they were killed. Ami just wants to finish Uni and start his life, he now can't attend Uni and because of death threats, he sleeps in safe houses and tries to carry on, but each night he knows it might be his last. If seen on the street and recognised he might be killed.

Ami's options are now very limited, Ami is my friend. This page and it's first cause have been set up to provide my friend Ami with the funds to buy a passport, travel visas and airfare, to save his life.
