FLAS (The Family Life Association of Swaziland) is a NGO and member association of IPPF Africa Region, that specializes in rights-based youth-focused sexual and reproductive health and rights services, programmes and advocacy in Swaziland. More ...

I worked there for two years as a Communication and Marketing Advisor. This is an initiative that I hold dearly and to that end, I have asked my friends and family for a monetary donation in lieu of gifts for my 30th birthday.

Things to consider:
- Swaziland has the highest rate of HIV in the world at 26.2%.

-Young women 20-25 are three times more likely to have HIV than their male counterparts of the same age.

-Unsafe/backstreet abortions is the leading cause of maternal death

- One in four women in Swaziland have reported having been sexually abused before the age of 18

- While the mean age for sexual debut is 18, the contraceptive use in this age group is 7%

- Youth in Swaziland are the highest at risk for HIV, unplanned pregnancy, sexually transmitted illnesses, sexual abuse, unemployment, poverty, human trafficking, and sex work.

THAT SAID... Everyday FLAS is trying to find better, more attractive, more resonating, fun and effective ways of educating, advocating, engaging, sensitizing, and motivating behaviour change with young people around sex, health access, preventative behaviour, and planning and decision making around life choices... with countless programmes, services, and communication and social behaviour change campaigns and interventions.

As well, FLAS runs the Youth Action Movement Swaziland (, a youth governance structure, that fosters SRH&R education and awareness among peers. As well, YAM fosters social responsibility, civic participation, governence, mentorship and leadership - This program has been the foundation of many people in leadership and governance roles in the country. Like many activities at FLAS and in the country, it remains wholly under funded and predominantly unrecognized for its role in youth development.

FLAS also has a youth internship program that develops skills in the work place and has helped our young people gain valuable experience and opportunity. Youth interns often go to be hired at other NGOs or have more applicable skill-sets for their career path or academic pursuits. This program is invaluable to the development of young people in Swaziland.

Help me, Help FLAS continue with their great and important work with young people in Swaziland.

How it will work:
On April 21st I will transfer the funds gathered here to my Royal Bank account.
FLAS has provided me with their banking information and I will do a wire transfer to this bank account at a cost to me of $41.00 CAD.

If you wish to skip the fundrazr page and transfer money directly to my bank account or FLAS'  I can provide this banking information. I will make an acknowledgement of receipt of this monies known for reasons of transparency and accountability.

With the money, I will write a letter which I will scan and send to FLAS. In it will be a wishlist of where I would prefer the funds be allocated.
Areas of particular interest to me are:
- Substantiating the current internship program at FLAS (specifically in communications and marketing)
- Substantiating Youth Action Movement activities (specifically in social behaviour change activities combating the social and cultural barriers to health access and illness prevention)

Depending one how much is gathered will determine how specific this wishlist is. I can make this wishlist viewable to whomever wishes to view it.

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.
