I couldn't agree more with Nelson Mandela when he said, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". That's why, if you would put your hand up in solidarity with this statement, I'm appealing to you to please help Siu... More ...

Miss Siu Chau Cham is a beautiful and intelligent young lady who lives in Vietnam. Siu studies International Economics (4.5 year duration) at the Ho Chi Minh City Foreign Trade University, partnered with Colorado University's Department of Economics.

She is also studying French and English - one of the university requirements. And not just that, but she waitresses and sells flowers to help pay her expenses.

Having begun her studies in 2011, Siu is due to complete in the summer of 2015. I met Mr Cham (Siu's father) and family in 2009 whilst undertaking some writing research on a matriarchal society in the highlands of Vietnam, combined with holiday. He was my guide.

I solicited the story of his life since he spoke English well, being taught by missionaries as a young man. His story and survival through the horrors of war is one that could have made him lose hope in the human race ... forever. But along with a soul that had only been developed through the fires of great adversity, and thread-bare "best garments" that he wore with dignity and complete acceptance, he had an undying belief in education as a way of changing the world. Not because he spoke loftily of it, but because he's persevered, working day and night, to support his daughter in university.

With the experience of growing up in Asia, I know theirs is genuine poverty. Hence, what Mr Cham has achieved to date in financing 39 months of his daughter's education is remarkable. It is truly against all odds - and rare to see social mobility under such conditions.

However, it was just now in December 2013 that I learnt of the young Miss Cham's plight. Mr Cham's health is failing and the family have fallen on crippling financial times.  This means that Siu will have to quit university shortly, returning to her highland home without a degree.

I felt so dismayed upon hearing Siu would have to quit, after all this incredible effort on her and her whole family's part, that I can do nothing other than act and also ask your assistance. It would be such a tragic loss if only £4,000 stood between her and all those dreams only 15 months away from realisation. The financing is specifically for lodgings, school fees, language tuition, study materials and books. A little goes such a long way!

I believe that together - simply by "Liking", "Sharing" or Giving, we can make a difference to Siu's future and create possibilities for yet further sustainable development in Vietnam. I so appreciate your support in this project. Thank you.
