A Little bit about Briar Described by his mom Tere:
Let's see,
how do I go about describing my son? Specially since I am not a writer
lol Briar is a bright kid who LOVES animals of all kinds. He has two
dogs and two cats. Oh yeah and a fish we got the day he was diagnosed.
He is in 9th grade and gets fairly decent grades. He's my sensitive
boy, he sees any animal hurting he's the one that tries to fix it
unless of course it's already dead and is a oppossum then he will take
the teeth out and make a necklace out of it. He's a boy its totally
normal lol He has a ATV that he loves to ride but it's not working
right now! He like playing video games specially the shoot em up
zombie ones, or Mario... he's like me he's a person of extremes. He
likes the color green I think it's because he likes to be outside a
lot. And since we moved up to Shaver he's usually outside until dark.
He loves to go fishing and will sit out there for hours to catch some.
He's like his dad in that way. He likes riding his bicycle but I have
some work to do on that to make it safer, the brakes suck which is bad
in the mountains. Hes all around a good kid that is very polite and
funny... hes a bit warped in the sensee of humor department but that's
part of his charm. When I get meetings from his teachers usually it's
2 things. One he is very polite and the second is that he's the class
clown and usually disrupts the class, Sorry teachers..
A few weeks ago Briar was feeling under the weather, I didn't
think much of it because his older brother Eddie had just gotten over
a nasty cold and I already had one and his dad had one too, so like
any normal parent cold medicine and bed. Well a weekend went by adn on
Monday he said he wasn't feeling well so I let him stay home again. He
went the next day and came home saying that he still wasn't feeling
well. All in all he missed a week of school. But it was nothing too
far out of the ordinary sniffles cough and a low grade fever for maybe
a day. Well the weekend came and I told him that if he wasn't better
by Sunday I was bringing him into the hospital. He was pale and just
real lethargic. So Sunday rolls around and he still wasn't better,
it's around 3 in the afternoon. I figure well we will go to the
emergency room and be out by 8 and still make it up the hill before
bedtime. 2 hours later our lives as we knew it was over. I knew
something was up when they moved us into a private room after being in
the pen for only 30 mintues. Then when the Dr came in with another
person and sat down my heart sunk. I knew something was wrong. He
proceeded to as me if I had seen all these bruises on Briar's legs. Oh
hell know you are NOT going to accuse me of abuse. I went on high
alert and was ready for a fight. But the Dr didn't go in that
direction. He started to tell me that he was low on iron and other
vitamins and I knew that becausee of how pale he was. He said okay we
found the cause of it... it's Leukemia. Briar started to cry and said
I don't want to die mom I'm too young to die. I was like oh damn... I
assured him that he wasn't going to die and that we were going to kick
it's ass and the fight begins now. I calmed him down and told him I
had to go pee. After I left the room I didn't quite lose it but I sure
was shaking but felt like shit for leaving Briar in there by himself.
So I called the kids dad told him and then called my best friend and
just told him I needed him now. I went back into where Briar was bound
and determined NOT to freak out and to be there for him.
We ended up in the PICU while they tried everything to get his
counts up high enough so that they could go in do his bone marrow and
spinal tests... but they also knew he would need a medi-port so we
waited until Tues. Where he got all that stuff done. And that's when
we found out he had Acute lymphocytic leukemia. Which I guess if you
were going to have leukemia Acute lymphocytic leukemia is the better
one to have. So his fight begins... All money raised will go towards,
travel and hotel stays as well as help with bills and gas exspenses.
