Viva la Vida hasn't added a story.
At any given time, we have around 50 dogs that were rescued from life
threatening situations, including accidents, abuse, neglect, death
row, etc.. We're just 2 people -Leo and Laura- and have only a handful
of local supporters. We work hard to guarantee the best foster home a
stray dog can have, and we thrive to find the best possible permanent
homes for all of them. However, we know some of them will always live
with us.
Because we have limited space and we must make sure we
don't have more dogs than we can properly care for, we prioritize the
most desperate cases. This means that almost every dog that arrives in
our "Colonia Canina" is in urgent need of good quality food,
expert veterinary care, all kinds of exams, and many times, surgery.
We have people that help us look after our dogs 24/7, and although we
are small, we have the best infrastructure in our country (for
example, the kennels have heated floors and we have air conditioned
rooms for the summer), but we still have a lot to improve. Besides,
the place demands constant maintenance, and sometimes it's hard to
keep up, as the needs of the dogs always come first.
We have
several big expense "moments" throughout the year.
Spaying/neutering, for example, is on us (100% of our
dogs were NOT spayed or neutered when rescued). Each
operation costs us US$70 (which is a lot of money when you have to do
a few every month). Deworming -which we must do 3 times a year- and
vaccination -which we do once a year- is another big expense. We are
now facing one of those "moments", when deworming and
vaccination will have to be done back to back. For this, we need to
raise an approximate US$50 per dog, which amounts to US$2500 for all
50 dogs. This is a lot of money in local currency (approximately
AR$20,000), which is extremely hard to raise, since our country
doesn't have a big tradition of giving, especially to organizations
that work with companion animals, like us. That's why we decided
"widen our audience" and try to reach out to people from
other countries, people that understand that a small effort from a lot
of people goes a long way (around here, the people that help us are
always the same few; it's hard to get new supporters; people tend to
have other priorities...). We -Leo and Laura- hope you will decide to
help us. You can check out our work in our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/coloniacanina.vivalavida or our
website www.viva-la-vida.com.ar
(sorry, it's all in Spanish!). We don't have "spectacular"
cases all the time because we make sure we don't bring in a new dogs
unless another dog has gone to a permanent home. As said before, we
consider it vital that we don't have more dogs than we can properly
care for. But if you look at all our postings for the last year or so,
you'll see some of the very serious cases that we have had, like Gala
(the Malinois-mix who you see in the picture here) that had almost
half her face -including her left eye- eaten up by maggots. With us,
Gala healed nicely, had reconstructive surgery by one of the top vet
surgeons in the country, was spayed and is now ready to go to a
permanent home. She's the sweetest thing.
Please, help us pay for our upcoming deworming-vaccination,
which is a way to help us continue to do all the work we do.
