I have the opportunity to participate as a volunteer in a Trent University student health and educational brigade with a Peterborough non-profit organization called Friends of Honduran Children (www.honduranchildren.com). In Honduras, Friends of Honduran Children partners with a Honduran agency called Sociedad Amigos de los Ninos which is based primarily in the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras and in the rural regions outside the city in an area called Nuevo Paraiso. This agency operates several programs in addition to health and educational brigades. My two weeks in Honduras will be enlightening, educational and beneficial to both my own learning about community health and education and to the Honduran children and families we work with in the rural villages.

Our team of twenty-five is comprised of students in Nursing, English and Psychology, along with our clinical instructors, a past student mentor, and two adult support members. We have three main areas of focus this year: education, health promotion and disease prevention, and construction projects. Our health topics include: HIV/AIDS awareness, sexual health, nutrition, oral or dental health, smoking cessation and the associated risks, and general hygiene such as hand washing. This year, we will also provide necessary educational materials to teachers in 5 rural schools along with food and clothing packs to the children to help provide support to their families. Our construction projects will focus on building and installing environmentally friendly stoves, one-bathroom cement latrines, cement floors to replace existing dirt floors and pillas (water receptacles) to homes in the rural region of Zanmorano.

Volunteers with Friends of Honduran Children willingly accept the personal financial responsibilities of their own flights, food and accommodation. However, volunteers are asked to raise additional funds to cover the cost of construction projects, educational support materials, food and other valuable supplies.
