My name is Jessica and I am reaching out to the community on behalf of my best friend Brittany and her family. Brittany gave birth on May 3 to a beautiful baby girl. Immediately, it was obvious there was something very wrong. Braelyn was whisked away to the NICU. She was born with Pierre Robin Syndrome, a genetic disorder that severely impairs the infants airway and feedings. In PRS the infant has a cleft palate, small chin, and lower jaw that recedes far back into the throat. The tongue is very large and falls into the back of the throat. This leads to choking and airway blockage. The infant requires a feeding tube to avoid aspirating and possibly later a tracheostomy (hole in windpipe) to breathe. Braelyn was transferred to Children's Hospital where she underwent surgery to bring her jaw forward with screws to hold it in place. However the surgery had to be stopped when a major artery was accidentally hit that supplies blood to her arm, and the fight turned to saving her arm. Braelyn has since had a second surgery to bring her jaw forward. She remains in Children's LA intubated (tube in windpipe), feeding tube, and a mass of life saving equipment to keep her tiny body alive. Brittany has not left her daughters side. Brittany has a 2yr old boy at home, born with CDH. He underwent multiple surgeries his first year of life and is a healthy toddler boy today. Brittany's husband Steve, is staying home to care for Stephen. Unfortunately he does not get sick pay. Brittany is a full time mom, the family is beginning to feel the financial strain. Additionally, the emotional and physical stress is wearing this family down to the core. Brittany has not been able to recuperate from the csection that delivered her baby.
That is why, today, I am extending this plea to all our FB friends and community. If anyone might find it in their heart to help this family with any small monetary donation (needed desperately for child care so Steve can get back to work), Brittany and Steve would be forever be grateful. Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, God Bless You.
