Gretchen Sommer hasn't added a story.
Pappi is a sweet little yorkie poo that found himself as a stray at a local animal control. He was covered in fleas with hair so matted that it had to be shaved completely off (Thanks to Lisa Wright of My Groomer in Flushing). He looked so old & unkempt with eyes all clouded blue & hazy. It was believed that he was at least 12 + years old. His eyes were all clouded over because he is completely blind. Imagine being in this loud, scary place all alone & not being able to see a thing.
The day came when his stray hold was up & a good friend of ours (Sue Tolbert, animal advocate extraordinaire!) went to get him. We all knew he needed saving & we were going to do all we could to help him.
First thing we did was take him to the vet for a full evaluation, including full blood panel & examination. His blood work came back perfect & after his exam, it was determined that he is around 6-7 years old, not the senior dog that we first thought. His teeth are in excellent condition, so that paired with his blood work is the things that helped determine his age. We also got him neutered as soon as we found him to be a healthy young guy!
Pappi is a happy little guy & although he can’t see, he gets around pretty good. He does bump into walls & gates (we have gates at the top of our stairs), and he does rely on the other dogs to help him navigate around. He is completely adoptable & once we get him all righted around, he will be available for adoption.
We took Pappi to a canine ophthalmologist at Oakland Veterinary Referral Service (OVRS). The reason Pappi is blind is because he has cataracts in both eyes (we have learned that this is very common in terrier mixes & is most likely an inherited defect in his eyes).
His right eye is completely clouded over & unfortunately there is nothing that can be done to repair this eye. The lens has detached and there is not much they can do at that point. Although this eye is completely blind, it is not painful or causing him any trouble, so that one can be just left as it is.
The left eye has a mature cataract, but the lens is still attached which means it can still be repaired. If left alone, it will most likely detach as the other lens did.
The left eye has no vision either. The Ophthalmologist feels he may see some shading, but highly unlikely. If he has this surgery his vision will be fully restored! Imagine going from being completely blind to seeing again!!
I know this amount seems like an incredible amount to raise, but I feel you cannot put a price on the ability to give Pappi the gift of sight! He has had a horrible life this far & I feel this will just make the last half of his life so much more enjoyable! He does have a great quality of life right now, but imagine the quality he could have.
We have to go back in 3 weeks for some presurgical testing & will be put on the surgery schedule at that point. We are planning on scheduling surgery in Mid March, as the Dr. is out of town the first part of March.
If for what ever reason Pappi is unable to have surgery, all money donated will be returned.
