My dear friend and housemate really needs physical therapy to help heal her body from chronic pain that often keeps her in bed. As many of you know, my husband and I live in a house with four other people. One of them is a dear sweet lady named Debbie. Upon meeting and getting to know her, you see that she is one of the most cheerful and joyful people you have ever met. It’s hard to believe that her loving eyes and big heart have experienced such horrific hardships that started at a very young age, things too personal for me to even share. A bout with viral arthritis (at the ripe age of 14, when her chronic pain started), migraines, and malaria are just some of physical challenges that she has had to fight through. Growing up dancing for a company, Debbie was forced to stop before she had even graduated high school, due to chronic pain. Her pain progressed throughout the years and she was forced to take a year off from college to focus on her health. It was during this time that she found out she was allergic to soy, dairy, and wheat, causing her to be very limited with what she can eat. Currently she has almost constant daily pain ranging from a 5-7 out of 10. EVERY DAY. Some days she stays in bed and others she will go to bed in the middle of the day because her pain is so bad.
Debbie has been involved in both fine and performing arts for several years. She is not just a performer but also a teacher. She has taught dance, choreographed a musical, created art development and musical drama groups, directed children’s plays, and facilitated art therapy groups, something she is particularly passionate about. This girl can’t NOT reach out to others. She can’t not see their pain and can’t not be compassionate and want to feed into their lives. She is finishing up school right now, and while she doesn’t know exactly what she will do when she graduates she will be serving others in some capacity. If you know her, you know that she can’t NOT do this.
Many of you who know Debbie, probably have no idea that she is in so much pain on such a regular basis. If you have ever struggled with chronic pain, you know how draining and discouraging it can be. It can be a constant struggle to stay “up.” She has fought with pain for so long that she began to wonder if anything could even be done. My husband and I paid for her to have an assessment with a physical therapist and we learned that there is a lot that can be done for her! She told me that it was the first time in a long while that that she had felt hopeful about her pain going away. Through my secret service skills, I have learned that we need to raise around $3000 to pay for therapy and get her body strong. The easiest way to give is through this fundraising page. You can also send checks made out to Therapeutic Associates with “Debbie Young” in the memo spot to 837 SW 1st Ave, Portland, OR. Debbie will get about $5.50 more for every $100 if you send a check in the mail.
