I want to send a gift of 28 animals to a developing nation through the World Vision Gift Catalog for Christmas. A gift from Lewis County, WA to the world, hopefully to save a few lives and help people provide for themselves and their families.

Everyday, hundreds of thousands of millions of people are in need. It’s a need that is universal in any culture. Basic needs: food, water, clothing, shelter, safety. Millions of people around the world go to bed at night hungry, go to school hungry … or don’t go to school at all in underdeveloped nations. Children die young because of lack of basic education about HIV/AIDS or because they don’t have nets to protect them from disease-ridden insects. Some are slowly poisoned by the only drinking water sources they have.

We have the power to make a difference. If you give up one mocha a week for a month, you could send two chickens or five ducks that could provide for and feed a family for years. If you give up one impulse purchase a month (about $100), you could feed a family of five for a week.

If you believe that people should help themselves and providing tools for people to make their own way, $100 provides a small business loan for a single mother in a developing nation to provide for her family.

Anyone can give. Everyone should give back. “We belong to each other” — Mother Teresa
