Update March 2015:
Dear Friends and Family,
As many of you know Melissa has been battling Stage 4 Colon cancer for the past few years. She continues to prove to us the extent of strength within her soul as she continues to fight with all her might against this terrible disease. Over the past few months, the cancer has become more aggressive and has begun to let its ugly face become more visible in her life. Melissa is currently in Strong Memorial Hospital battling severe pain as a result of the cancer spreading further. The medical team at Strong has been amazing but has begun to reach its limitations in terms of her treatment options. Some alternative treatment options have come before us in Philadelphia and we are going to try to get her there as soon as possible. We need assistance to help cover the costs of this trip. Any support you can give is more than appreciated not only by Missy, but by all of us.
Melissa Thorn is 35 years old and has a husband and two boys, ages 16 and 7. Melissa has always struggled a little more than most people. She was born at only 1lb 1 oz and lived many months of her newborn life in a NICU following an emergency open heart surgery due to the lack of organ development. She has fought to become the most successful person she could possibly be. Throughout her life in school she received services to help her with learning disabilities. As a senior in high school she was faced with many challenges with her health and then became a teen mother. A few years ago, after almost double the number of years it would take the average person to complete, she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree in Human Services. She then served as a Dayhab specialist with the Seneca ARC. We all have been so proud of her accomplishments in life and continue to be amazed with the fight and the will to be the best she can be. In May 2012 our family received the worst news ever. Melissa the one who had always overcome the most difficult obstacles in life, was diagnosed with Colon cancer. And just when we thought it couldn’t get any worse, a week later we were told that not only was it Stage 4 but that it had metastasized to her Liver and several of her lymph nodes. Given only a 20 % chance to survive, the family was filled with fear and devastation. She has beaten the odds and proven the fight she has. We are all praying she will continue to be that fighter we all know her to be. We all need support to continue to be hopeful and prayers to send strength her way. We are very fortunate that my sister does have medical insurance which helps cover some of the costs of her treatment. Much to our surprise it still is very taxing with the frequent trips to strong and other medical expenses.
