Beaver Acres Elementary, Ryan Hoxie hasn't added a story.
Our community has a diverse and traditionally transitory population. With over 10% of our population in a mobile state, our staff has a close relationship with district and community liaisons who provide access to information and services for families who need assistance or are facing immediate hardships. With 64% of the 774 total student population qualifying for free and reduced lunch, our school is a school wide Title I school.
Our school has a history of responding to students' needs, innovative practices and academic success. In 2009, state schools superintendent Susan Castillo nominated our elementary school to be a Title I Nationally Distinguished School based on its exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years.
Our school was recognized for this based on state report card ratings and federal requirements showing students made significant progress during the last five years. Our school is a school that is ready to take the next step forward to becoming Future Ready, to help raise student achievement and close the achievement gap while building the foundation for careers in computer science and beyond. However, we need your help to make this happen.
Where will our students find jobs when they enter the work force? Many will find a career with computer science. So how can we begin to give our students the interest and expose to computer science? We can start by growing kindergarten computer scientists with Ozobots.
Ozobots are easy to use robots that can be coded using color. Kindergarteners will be able to grasp the very basic building block of coding while having fun. Students of all ages are immediately drawn to these engaging devices and are sometimes not aware of the complex learning that is happening.
Our kindergarten students will have the opportunity to learn how to use Ozobots. As they discover how to "color code" these robots, each classroom will create and display a collection of color codes as a poster so all students will have access to these code.
Although the Ozobots have all of their codes listed online and in the instructions but student discover is so much more fun! As soon as each classroom has discovered the Ozobots color codes, each student will have the opportunity to design a track for Ozobot to travel that will read each students favorite code. The grand finale will allow students to have Ozobot read and run their very own code.
The funds raised will go directly to the purchase of 6 Ozobot robots. This will allow for small groups of kindergartnen students to learn how to program the Ozobots. As students become more proficient with programming the Ozobots, the Ozobots would then be shared amoung the kindergarten team.
