Cavell Smith hasn't added a story.
Jody was first diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in February 2011 at age 33.
In February 2011 Jody was admitted to hospital as emergent with a complete bowel blockage. He underwent surgeries including Hartman's Procedure (bowel resection) and a colostomy, after which he went through six rounds of chemotherapy. In September of that year, once Jody recovered from the chemo, he underwent liver resection surgery where doctors removed cancer from his liver, as well as a colostomy reversal. He then had another six rounds of chemotherapy, finishing in January 2012. At this time Jody was given the green light to resume life as normal. He eagerly went back to work, he was able to play sports again, including softball, hockey and basketball, and do many of the other things he enjoys in life.
In July 2013 the cancer returned, this time making an appearance in his right lung. We flew to Halifax five days after his diagnosis so that Jody could have a PET scan to determine the exact locations of the cancer. This procedure was not offered here. The following week he underwent yet another surgery, a right thoracotomy, to remove two cancer spots from his lung. This was followed by chemotherapy consisting of 1160 pills. During his chemotherapy Jody tried to work but the side effects were too serious and, in November 2013, he was forced to go off work. Jody finished his chemo treatments in March 2014, just in time to celebrate his 36th birthday. We prayed for it to be over.
In April 2014 doctors discovered that several lymph nodes in Jody’s chest were enlarged. A bronchial biopsy confirmed that the cancer was back again. Doctors have informed Jody that this time the cancer in inoperable; as a result Jody is scheduled to have Chemotherapy every two weeks indefinitely.
Jody has been off work since November 2013. Even though it's been a very bumpy road, his attitude has been truly remarkable. He has had to make many sacrifices, giving up work, sports, and much of his social life. Amazingly, he has gone through all of this with his chin up, making others laugh with his light hearted jokes and happy-go-lucky attitude. Yet, the stress of all of this is accumulating.
We are asking for your support so that Jody doesn’t have to contend with the financial stress and worry that his illness entails, when he should be focused on his health and well-being. Any support you can offer is greatly appreciated. Please help Jody kick cancer's ass - for good!!!
