Team Fabin Needs Your help!
Shields Elementary students, Charlie Gossett, Gabby Orsini, Emily Musgrove, Parker Cole, Sarah Nutter, Kemper Cole, and Michael Daniello, formed their Odyssey of the Mind team in October of last year and have worked tirelessly for more than 5 months, to make it the best it could be, their best has taken First Place in the Ocean Region Competition, and then again First Place in the Delaware State Finals, thus advancing to the World Finals in Iowa.
But before going to Iowa, the team has to meet possibly the biggest challenge of all, raising more than $9000, which will go entirely to pay for registration, travel, lodging and meals-- but more about that later.
“Team Fabin,” (Freaky Cabin) as the team calls themselves, competed in "The Not-So-Haunted House" category, in which the team had to create and present an original performance Their performance is set at "Camp Murderkill," (BWA-HA-HAHA-HA!), a fictional haunted summer camp on the banks of Murderkill River, right here in Delaware. In addition to writing the script, building all of the sets, creating the costumes, choreographing and performing in the performance, the team also had to solve specific technical problems that included designing and building four different special effect mechanisms that would seem to be meant to scare, but instead causes a different reaction. All of this all had to be done within a mere a $145 budget.
Over 800 teams from around the world will compete in the four day Odyssey of the Mind World Finals. The competition emphasizes creativity and teamwork and has grown into the largest international creative problem-solving competition worldwide.
Now back to that more than $9000 it is going take to get is to Iowa. There is no way around it, it is not cheap to take nine people and a complete stage set accross the country for a four day competition. We figure we can raise about $1000 through Bake Sales, Car Washes, Spreading Mulch, Pulling Weeds/Garden Clean up, you know, good old fashioned sweat equity Sweat Equity, then we are relying on the extreme generosity of our local businesses and community organizations for about $4000-- and hope that leaves you asking yourself, "Right now, what can I do to help get them that next $4000?" THE ANSWER: Your donations of $20, $50, $100 or whatever you can afford will make all the difference. It will be so appreciated. Not only will it get them to Iowa, it will surely make there pergromance even better knowing that their family, freinds and neighbors belive in, and support them in competing for the World Championship, as well as achieving a sense of pride that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. This is indeed, has been, and with your support, will continue to be a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Thank you so much already, for your words of support and congratulations. It has been so amazing to watch these kids create, from nothing more than the little sparks in their brains, something so fun and exciting. We can't wait for those 800 or so other teams, literally from all over the world, see what seven kids, from the first town, in the first state can do.
Thank you.
