The future of a peaceful, just, and prosperous Canada depends on reconciliation with Aboriginal peoples. Please join us in telling our political representatives that reconciliation is important to YOU. More ...

Moved by the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC), my family began distributing copies of Thomas King's exceptional (and now award-winning) book "The Inconvenient Indian" to some friends and talking to them about Canada's colonial history and present. These friends joined our family, passed the books to their own families and friends, and soon a person-to-person network grew into "Our TRC Legacy Project". We are now raising money to send a book to each of our 306 Members of Parliament., because it is crucial that our political representatives become more involved in this conversation with us.

Our goal is to continue the work begun by the TRC by supporting a national conversation about the everyday work of reconciliation that all Canadians are asked to doWe have bought 450 books to date, and we are asking for your help so we can do more!

It will cost about $5000 to complete this portion of the project. The Living Language Institute Foundation has taken up this project as well, which means we can now offer tax receipts for any donations. Any surplus money will be used by the LLIF to develop and/or support Aboriginal language reviltilzation projects.

The plan:

1. On March 1, 2014, we will send each of our 306 MPs a copy of "The Inconvenient Indian" at a media event in Vancouver. Cost of books: $4100. Cost of postage: about $400.

2. One month later, family, friends, and volunteers (like you?) across the country will call or email their MPs and ask them: Did you get the book? Did you read it? What will you do in your role in government and in your life to contribute to reconciliation?

3. We are collecting responses to Mr. King's book from readers at our Tumblr site. Our MPs are asked to contribute their thoughts to this repository to begin the conversation with their constituents. It is also a good way to track the participation of our MPs!

At the Truth and Reconciliation Commission National Event in Vancouver last year, Chief Justice Murray Sinclair challenged all Canadians to take up the task of building a just Canada. This is our contribution -- but we need help!
